How Criminal Justice Research Really Works: Research Methods in Criminology

0

What is examined to determine the reasons behind crime and the effectiveness of policies, and whether crime is rising or falling? Research methods are the beginning of the answer. Every credible research finding relates to crime, offenders, policing, courts and corrections is rooted in the systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of evidence.

Prior to the study of crime scientifically, there is research methodology both in criminal justice and in criminology. Research questions are developed instead of relying on assumption or opinions, suitable research design is produced, relevant information is gathered, analysis of evidence is conducted and conclusions are reported, which can be evaluated by other people.

Research Methods in Criminology: What is it?

The quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches are frequently adopted in Criminological research. Quantitative research is based on numerical data and is primarily used to study patterns, such as the rate of crime or victimization, or the relationships between variables, such as between crime or victimization rates and arrests. A key aspect of this strategy are instruments of surveys, experiments, official statistics and statistical analysis.

Qualitative research aims at an understanding of social context, behaviour, meaning and experience. Researchers may use interviews, focus groups, participant observation, field studies, and/or case studies to explore the what and why of questions that cannot be answered solely with numbers. Mixed-methods research is when both quantitative and qualitative evidence are utilized, when both help support the research.

Research design is important because. . . . .

Good Criminal Justice research design relates research question to method of answering the question. The population studied, sampling strategy, variables, measurement, data collection, and analysis methods should be taken into consideration by researchers. Descriptive, correlational, experimental, quasi-experimental, historical, case-study, and field-based designs are frequent research designs.

In addition, researchers need to assess the validity and reliability. Validity deals with the accuracy of measurement whereas reliability refers to the consistency of measurement. Ethical issues are of no less importance, especially if the participants in research are victims, offenders, sensitive information, or vulnerable populations.

These methods are extremely important reasons.

Research Methods are tools used to convert questions about crime into credible evidence. They serve a number of purposes for criminologists, such as testing theories, researching risk factors, evaluating criminal justice programs, developing research about victimization, looking at policing practices, and helping to guide evidence-based policy.

Statistics or surveys are not learning objectives for criminology students, research methods is. It involves being able to ask more intelligent and informed questions, considering evidence in a critical way, and creating research that might lead to understanding crime and justice better.
